A Peek Inside the February Pairings Box: Argentinian Steak Night

Matt and I spent our honeymoon in Argentina (you can read about our travels here, here and here) and one of our most memorable meals was an unexpected one. On a particularly cold and rainy day, we ducked into a business lunch restaurant in Buenos Aires adorned with soccer jerseys and filled with men in suits. We ordered a bottle of Malbec, two steaks and side dish of simply roasted red peppers. We polished off said bottle of wine and by the time we were done with our steaks, we were feeling pretty warm and happy.

We’ve got a soft spot for all things Argentinian, including empanadasalfajores and dulce de leche. We’ve been meaning to pay tribute to that once in a lifetime trip and the February Pairings Box seemed like just right opportunity. We put our own spin on that steak, adding fresh herbs and marinating the meat in wine, and jazzed up our roasted red peppers with balsamic vinegar and mint. For dessert, we opted for chocolate. Although making truffles from scratch may seem like a hassle, I assure you they’re actually easier than whipping up a batch of chocolate chip cookies. The bonus is that you can customize them in a myriad of different ways, adding flavorings to the ganache and rolling them in anything from cocoa powder to chopped nuts. They’re great paired with a cup of coffee, and they’re the sort of thing you can slip in a little box or baggie and give to a few special friends.
