  1. A Peek Inside the January Pairings Box: Brunch Gathering

Baked Challah French Toast with Saigon Cinnamon* Crumble

If I could, I’d eat breakfast three times a day. And if you’ve gotten to know my taste, you’ve probably recognized that I choose sweet over savory most mornings. The only thing I enjoy as much as a stack of pancakes, crêpes, or waffles, are perfectly scrambled eggs and a toasty, buttery piece of bread on the side. I top mine with jam, go figure.

January’s Pairings Box (Brunch Gathering) was, unsurprisingly, a treat in more ways than one. You’d think we invited a houseful of guests to recipe test this one but truth be told, we spent a lazy Sunday morning and afternoon in our pajamas, eating French Toast straight from the pan. I fret a lot over recipes; making sure the amount of herbs and spices used are just right, the recipes themselves are sort of whimsical and creative, and don’t involve a crazy amount of work. The first taste of a new dish that makes me want to jump up and down with glee, is my favorite part. Sometimes, I really do (jump around in my tiny little kitchen).

    Jeweled Fruit Salad

This collection came together over several weeks, and the cinnamon crumble on the French Toast was actually a last minute addition; my inspiration was one of my favorite desserts: apple crisp. Matt’s contribution to the menu were the soft-scrambled eggs; this is our go-to recipe and we always make sure to load it up with plenty of fresh herbs. The fruit salad is as delicious as it is pretty and if you can’t find whole poms, you can always buy the seeds separately.

January’s Pairings Box recipe collection included:

Baked Challah French Toast with Saigon Cinnamon Crumble
    Jeweled Fruit Salad
    Soft-Scrambled Eggs with Buttery Toast

     Soft-Scrambled Eggs with Buttery Toast

Our Premium ingredient was Vietnamese Saigon Cinnamon (the best kind!). And the Musical Pairing (TK027) was San Francisco-based CATHEDRALS – Unbound b/w Harlem (they’re getting so much love right now, and it’s so well-deserved). You may have been lucky enough to catch them at SXSW.

  2. A Peek Inside the November Pairings Box: Pizza Party

A Peek Inside the November Pairings Box: Pizza Party

On December 31st, 2013, we chased down the mailman to get out the very last shipment of December Pairings Boxes. You may or may not know that I’m actually pretty hands off when it comes to packaging and shipping Pairings Boxes (Matt is a one man show). He’s also the one who handles all our customer service, writes personal notes and emails, and lugs boxes to the post office. It sorta worked out that way since he was ready to start his own law practice, and I was working (and commuting) full time; not to mention, I’m really, really bad at packaging. I much prefer cooking, writing, and photographing.

The last few months have been chaotic for us. Like any e-commerce or retail business, we see a surge of new customers during the holidays; we up our inventory and for an operation that’s merely two people, it means a lot of overtime. We’ve done our best to keep up with everything online and offline, and I’m really excited to get back into a more normal routine. I’m not really a resolutions girl, so I’m just happy to start 2014 with the hope that this year will be even better than the last.

A Peek Inside the November Pairings Box: Pizza Party

So to close off this first week of 2014, I wanted to share some snapshots of the November Pairings Box (I’ll share December soon, too!). It was truly a treat for us to recipe test this one — a Turntable Kitchen Pizza Party! We make pizza at home often, and we’re always experimenting with crusts and toppings. Homemade pizza is magical — it’s the sort of thing that’s easier to make than you think, and always pays off.

The November Pairings Box recipes included:

    Simple Tomato Sauce
Simple Tomato Pizza with Fennel Pollen
    Clam, Pancetta and Arugula Pizza

The Premium ingredients were fennel pollen and chili flakes.

Our featured artist / Musical Pairing was LOCAL NATIVES, you guys! We had a great mix to go with the recipes, too.

I’ll be back next week with a fresh new recipe for you, and hope your 2014 is off to a great start.

  3. A Peek Inside the October Pairings Box: Bistro Dinner

A Peek Inside the October Pairings Box: Bistro Dinner

As much as I love cooking in the summer, when the market feels like a gluttonous feast in and of itself, fall and winter hold a special place in my heart.

Warm, textured soups, hearty greens and little nibbles frequently grace our table. I’m a bit behind, I know, in sharing peeks into our past months’ Pairings Boxes, so we’ll rewind to October.

A Peek Inside the October Pairings Box: Bistro Dinner

October’s Pairings Box theme was Bistro Dinner: casual, inviting unfussy.

    This month’s recipe collection included:

Warm Olives and Feta with Citrus Zest and Oregano
Kale, Brussel Leaf and Radish Caesar
Fall Minestrone with Fennel, White Beans and Kale

A Peek Inside the October Pairings Box: Bistro Dinner
We paired the meal with the month’s Premium Ingredient, Mediterranean Oregano (the less common cousin of Mexican Oregano, which we tend to cook with here in the States). We loved it so much we incorporated it into all three recipes, which was kind of fun.

Our featured artist was the wonderful Army Navy, which you can read more about here (and take a listen).

  4. A Peek Inside the September Pairings Box: The Farmhouse Feast

A Peek Inside the September Pairings Box: The Farmhouse Feast

Every month, I proclaim that the last month’s Pairings Box was my favorite recipe collection to work on. I guess the truth is that the Pairings Box recipes are always my favorite to work on. Knowing that I have to create three original recipes each month, in addition to the recipes we share on the site, often stresses me out, I’m not gonna lie. But every month, this burst of creativity strikes and we get rolling, tweaking and adapting, sometimes changing direction entirely.

A Peek Inside the September Pairings Box: The Farmhouse Feast

The September Pairings Box has a special place in my heart because it not only features recipes that I keep coming back to, but includes a very special Musical Pairing. Typhoon. Have you heard of them? We’re currently featuring their Tour Pairings on the music side of things and the 7″ has been playing on repeat in our home.

A Peek Inside the September Pairings Box: The Farmhouse Feast

As for the recipes, this month’s collection included:

    Wild Mushroom Bruschetta
Honey-Thyme Chicken Thighs Over a Bed of Greens
Plum and Amaretto Cobbler with Almond Biscuits

The Premium Ingredient this month was almond meal. Over the last two years, we’ve gotten a bunch of requests from folks to sell some of our ingredients in the TK Market. We’ve been growing the Market slowly and have, to date, only sold Premium Vanilla Beans. But, we’re hoping to start selling some more ingredients soon. We’ll also be freshening things up with a few other new products. Stay tuned!

  5. A Peek Inside the August Pairings Box (Japanese-Inspired Evening)!

A Peek Inside the August Pairings Box!

The recipe collections we feature in our Pairings Boxes are inspired by a range of experiences, and the August Pairings Box was one of the most exciting we’ve worked on. The collection was inspired by our trip to Japan (part of our partnership with UGG Australia‘s Creative Council) and each recipe brings me back to our travels.

A Peek Inside the August Pairings Box!

Our hope is that the Japanese-inspired box would transport you as well. With hand-crafted recipes that draw from the flavors and textures of the cities we visited, a Premium ingredient (Organic Nori) that would help you achieve these combinations, an exotic Musical Pairing, and an exclusive digital mix packed full of the best new music, we think this collection really epitomizes what the Pairings Box is all about: an opportunity to explore, play, and share an experience with friends and family.

A Peek Inside the August Pairings Box!

The recipes inside last month’s Pairings Box included:

    Chilled Japanese-Style Tofu
    Deconstructed Sushi Rice Bowl
    Broiled English Peas

A Peek Inside the August Pairings Box!

Our wonderful sponsor, UGG Australia (the folks behind the Creative Council), kindly sent over 25 $100 gift vouches for us to slip into random subscribers’ boxes. If you were one of the lucky folks to score a gift certificate, we hope you’ve had a chance to pick out your pair. UGG Australia’s selection of boots and slippers are insanely comfy and well made…we pretty much live in ours these days and I can’t wait to wear my boots on upcoming winter trips to Tahoe and Ohio.

A Peek Inside the August Pairings Box!

Last month’s Pairings Boxes ended up going out later than expected due to an unanticipated delay with our record plant (it was the first time something like this has ever happened in the two years we’ve been running the biz), but we hope they were worth the wait. We’d love to see pics of your Pairings Box, the record, and any recipes you make from it. Be sure to use the hashtags #pairingsbox and #creativecouncil when tagging your photos on Twitter and Instagram.

Vietnamese Shrimp and Mango Noodle Bowls

Last month’s Pairings Box recipe collection was a dream for me to create. Summer cooking is my absolute favorite (see proof here) and I had no shortage of ideas for a collection that would transport you to a little beach house where cleaning is optional, sleeping in is a given, and lazy al fresco lunches are a daily staple.

The recipes in last month’s collection included:

    Maple Iced Coffee
Vietnamese Shrimp and Mango Noodle Bowls
    Watermelon and Blackberry Salad

    Maple Iced Coffee

The Premium ingredient of the month was Maple Sugar, which was used in the Maple Iced Coffee recipe. The featured artist was VISUALS – Levitation b/w Fata Morgana.

As some of you may have heard, we are thrilled that UGG Australia and the Creative Council is sponsoring the August Pairings Box AND is providing a $100 gift certificate to 25 random subscribers.

There are only TWO DAYS left to start your subscription with August’s Pairings Box.

Chicken Soup with Posole and Tortilla Crisps

Last month’s Pairings Box was an ode to one of our favorite meals: soup! The star of the show was this Chicken Soup with Posole and Tortilla Crisps, accompanied by Toasted Cumin Guacamole and Toasted Cumin Popcorn. You might have guessed that our Premium Ingredient last month was Toasted Cumin (it’s a-mazing).

The recipe collection is paired with a 7″ inch single by Salt Cathedral (you can read the review and take a listen here).

Baked Vanilla Cake Donuts with Maple and Meyer Lemon Glaze

This month’s Pairings Box was devoted to smoke. We wanted it to smell like campfire when you opened your box, and I think we achieved that goal with the month’s Premium Ingredient, Hickory Smoked Pacific Sea Salt.

    This month’s recipe collection included:

Sweet Potato Chips with Hickory Smoked Pacific Sea Salt
Turntable Kitchen’s Smoky 6 Ounce Cheeseburger
Baked Vanilla Cake Donuts with Maple and Meyer Lemon Glaze

  9. TK020: KHUSHI – Magpie / When You Start & You Say

I never cease to be amazed by what some of the most truly talented solo musicians are capable of. Case in point, you’d never believe that the three tracks on this month’s single, which features London-based Kalim ‘Khushi‘ Patel, are the work of a solo musician. After all, each cut could be described as cinematic, elaborately constructed, and breathtakingly expansive. Nonetheless, it’s true: each of these tracks were produced, written, and (with the sole exception of some backing vocals by Julie Thorp on “When You Start”) performed entirely by the man himself. Yet his music manages to call to mind the work of some of my favorite bands including The National, Local Natives, and (at times) Modest Mouse.

For example, the single’s a-side “Magpie” opens with a drifting, dreamlike melody built from a resonator guitar riff set to an understated, skittering rhythm that unfurls jubilantly into a widescreen, synth-cloaked beast. Quite simply, it’s a beautiful track. But it’s not the music alone that commands attention. Passionate and poignant, his lyrics are equally captivating: “The silence will take care of itself, but I want you and not somebody else. Caught up in things we couldn’t change, but this arrow’s flying on its way.”

It’s a good omen for the songwriter that although he’s received considerable praise from music bloggers, there seems to be little consensus as to which of his tracks is his “best” yet. In fact, each of the tracks featured on this single could be tapped as the standout (and almost certainly has by one music critic or another). In fact, it was “When You Start” that first caught my attention. It opens with a softly flowing melody and gentle falsetto before ultimately bursting into a crescendo of propulsive drumming, piano, and circular, nearly-snarled vocals: “So long, I could go on so, hold on, we can dance all night, so long, but I could go on so, hold on, we can dance all night long.”

Meanwhile, the single is closed out with the bright, morning-lit ballad “You Say.” A crisp acoustic guitar melody swirls weightlessly alongside Khushi’s smooth croon as the tune gently floats along. Ghostly harmonies and a soft-handed rhythm build on the tune as the tune soars higher and higher before disappearing, quietly out of sight. It’s almost guaranteed to leave you with butterflies circling around inside your head.

As always, it’s a limited-edition, hand-numbered pressing. This time we did 400 copies on “translucent green” vinyl alongside a special edition of 75 copies on “black & gold” vinyl for gold club members. We have less than 20 copies before we’re sold out. Subscribe to the Pairings Box to get one before they’re gone.

  10. A Special Pairings Box Collaboration: Turntable Kitchen + Not Without Salt

Ashley Rodriquez is one of the loveliest people in the blogosphere and I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know her both online and in-person. She’s a mother of three (who knows how she does it!), a beautiful writer, and a skilled photographer. Whenever she has a new post up on her site, Not Without Salt, I’m always in awe — of her creative flavor combinations, the images she captures, and the accompanying words. I find that few food writers have it all: the ability to convey relatable stories, come up with inspired recipes, and capture beautiful photos of them. Ashley is one of those people that does, and I’m so honored that she contributed the recipes in our April Pairings Box collection.

I’ll keep the details a secret, as we always do, until subscribers start receiving their boxes (in mid April) but I will tell you that the vegetarian-friendly recipes are nothing short of drool-worthy. I’m also pretty stoked about next month’s Premium Ingredient, which was Ashley’s selection as well.

We’re now accepting new subscribers beginning with the April Pairings Box. Quantities are, as usual, limited, so hop on over and subscribe today (USA, Canada, International). As a reminder, we do ship all over the world.

For more information about the Pairings Box and how we work, check out the Pairings Box page and FAQ.

  11. Turntable Kitchen Teams Up with Shutterbean for the March Pairings Box!

In my phone, Tracy’s contact info is saved as ‘Tracy Shutterbean.’ Strangely, Matt is still ‘Matthew Hickey.’ I cannot explain these things. In any case, Tracy has been a wonderful friend and an inspiration to me in so many ways. When I found out I was pregnant, one of the many thoughts that crossed my mind was, “how will I be able to pull together the recipes for the Pairings Box with a newborn baby on my hands?!” I kid you not; these are the sorts of things I was thinking about while holding a pregnancy test with two double lines on it in my bathroom at 10:45 pm on the eve of a business trip to New York City.

Thankfully, a few very talented friends were happy to help out and we found ourselves cooking up some very cool collaborations. Our January Pairings Box, which sold out before we even had a chance to announce our partnership with Spoon Fork Bacon, was a big hit. Jenny and Teri came up with a unique collection of Korean-inspired recipes, all centered around the month’s Premium ingredient, Gochugaru (Korean Chili Flakes). Next month, Pairings Box subscribers will be in for another treat: a recipe collection curated by the fabulous Tracy Shutterbean!

What’s more, we’re including a VERY special bonus treat in next month’s Pairings Box. You might remember seeing these gorgeous bamboo skewers from AHeirloom…The wonderful folks from the company are generously gifting all Pairings Box subscribers with a set of skewers created for Turntable Kitchen! As a husband and wife team, we love the fact that AHeirloom is also a family-run small business. In addition to the skewers, Amy and her husband Bill create expertly-crafted cutting boards in the shape of all 50 states. We’re big fans of our California cutting board, which we use for everything from serving cheese and crackers to cutting bread. We hope you enjoy both of these very special treats in next month’s Pairings Box.

It’s been so fun working with such creative and inspiring people and adding their unique voices to our product. We can’t wait to hear what you think about next month’s Pairings Box.

Now accepting new subscribers for the March Pairings Box!

More great news: we have just begun accepting new subscribers, beginning with the March Pairings Box. If you are purchasing a subscription shipping within the United States, use this link. We also ship internationally! Canadians can use this link to subscribe; click here if you live outside of the U.S. or Canada and would like to subscribe to the Pairings Box. You can also purchase one month and three month gift subscriptions through the TK Market (among other goodies).

Stay tuned for new recipes next week from some awesome friends/contributors. We’re slowly making our way back into the kitchen following the arrival of little Neko Rose. I can hardly believe that this Sunday she’ll be four weeks old!
