When I was 22, my mom and I took a trip to Europe together, where I learned that she was even cooler than I gave her credit for before. She did the sorts of things my girlfriends did when we took trips together: drinking her fair share of beer in Prague, taking photos in front of foreign signs that sounded kinda dirty, and striking up conversations with complete strangers on trains and in restaurants. My mom, I realized, was actually just like me.
This weekend, I’m taking her to Zuni Cafe to finally try my favorite chicken ever (hopefully), pampering her with a manicure and a pedicure, and then getting together with the rest of my family to cook something delicious on the grill at my parents’ house.
