Single Serving: Neko Case – Man

Neko Case

There are plenty of reasons to love Neko Case. She’s a brilliant and consistently rewarding songwriter, an honest-to-god vocalist dedicated to singing as a craft, and a marquee member of the much beloved Canadian-built supergroup The New Pornographers. Still, if you need another reason, her gender-bent new single is a good one. Case tears down gender stereotypes as she bitingly declares, “I am the man in the fucking moon / Cause you didn’t know what a man was / until I showed you.” Ultimately, though, Case makes it clear that the tune is about the strength and inner-toughness of women, as she purposefully declares that, “A woman’s heart is the watermark by which I measure everything.” Oh yeah, did I mention that M. Ward lets loose some jagged, fiery guitar riffs across the tune?

Neko Case – Man

It’s available from Anti-Records Summer Sampler alongside tracks from Mavis Staples, Calexico, Beth Orton, Man Man, and more.
