Single Serving: The Drums – The Drums

You’ll recall the Drums as the Brooklyn-based quartet who brightened the dark corners of indie-dom this past winter with the singles from their infectiously catchy Summertime! EP.  Their back with a recently released self-titled debut full-length.  Retaining their brand of indie new-wave surf rock, the Drums is a sonic tide pool swirling the spacious tones of the Smiths and the tonal ocean-infused waves and upbeat harmonies of the Pyramids or the Daytonas.  Check it out and them watch them on one of their remaining tour dates with Surfer Blood.  And then pick up that LP over at Amazon.

So what do you think?  Did the album live up to the promise of the EP?

Hey Matt! Howz it goin man?

Back when the digital release of this album came out there were a lot of negative reviews that weren’t giving me much sense of what the album was like. There seemed to be a preoccupation with the “packaging” of the band and not so much with what they were trying to do from a pop music standpoint.

Anyway, I haven’t heard the full album yet but I’m about to drop a nice chunk of change on music and I think this album will be in the mix.

    Thanks for the post!

  • Hey Brian,

    Thanks for the comment!

I think that the full length is quite good. It isn’t as universally solid as the E.P., but it is still quite good.

Once you get a chance to listen to the album, let me know your thoughts on how it stands up.

I hope you are having a good week!

Well, I think half of the album is great, the rest of the songs are in a way the same as the others, but just not good enough. Unfortunately most of the songs I really like were already part of the EP. Put “We Tried” and “I Need Fun In My Life” onto the EP and you’ve got a great Drums album.
Overall, The Drums are one of the bands I liked during 2010, but the album won’t reach top 10 status. That’s why I personally would say the album didn’t live up to the promise of the EP. Anyway, Let’s go Surfing is a stand-out track this year (this year, because the EP got released in 2010 in Germany 😉 ). And it perfectly gave the route for my surf music faible. 2010 is the surfing year, unfortunately a year in which I didn’t go surfing. 🙁

  • Hey Tobias,

Good to hear from you. I’d agree with that, but I probably like a little over half of the album including a few of the new tracks. Still, the EP might make my Top 10 EPS – but the album won’t make the Top 10 albums. Of course, that is in part because there have been a lot of really good albums this year.

I hope all is well in Germany.

Hm ok, counting the songs I like I also get more than the half.
Everything’s alright over here. Friday afternoon and the weather was really, really good today. Perfectly fitting with the Drums’ music.
And guess what… I’m starting my own blog these days. I wanted to do that for ages, but never got round to start one. I’ve written a few small articles so far, but I’m still experimenting with several blog designs. And I’m wondering about the language. Stick to my mother tongue or writing in English, or both..

    Tobi

  • Hey Tobias! That is great. Let me know the address. Especially if it is in English. One idea: you could do what some sites do (like No Modest Bear) and post in both languages, but that might be a lot more work.

  • audiollama

Hey, the address is http://www.athomeinnuernberg.wordpress.com. It’s not really complete, there’s so much stuff on wordpress. Today I made two small posts in English, well, I don’t know how to do it. I can’t find English on No Modest Bear, did you really mean that site? It would be a possibility.

  • Hey, I love the site. I’ll be reading for sure. After all, I know we share similar taste in music. Oh, and you are right, the site I was thinking of was http://www.deliciouscopitone.com that does posts in two languages. They also have great taste in tunes.

    Howdy Matt!

I finally got around to buying The Drums full length. At his very moment I’m taking advantage of my first chance to listen through the whole album.

I’m loving it! It reminds me of Franz Ferdinands first album in that the songs were given the freedom to develope to the fullest of their pop potential. Sometimes bands get hung-up on what they don’t want to sound like, so it’s refreshing when a band sounds like they’re comfortable with themselves. CutCopy has that quality too.

Later dude, I hope all is well!

    -Brian
