Jetskiis are a San Francisco-based five-piece formed by “a singer living under house arrest, a bassist without a valid mailing address, two recently unemployed drummers, and a guitarist in the midst of a gender epiphany.” If you were to think that sounds like the perfect combination of people to devote some serious time to form a unique band and begin work on an awesome debut – you’d be right.
On Spraycation, Jetskiis fill a darkly atmospheric soundscape with spiraling guitars riffs, crisp bass and distant driving percussion to craft a sound they describe as “island grunge.” But despite that description, there is little that can be described as “tropical” about their tunes. Instead their echo-heavy reverb-laden tunes will call to mind Joy Divison, Roxy Music, The Pleased, Interpol, the XX and other bands that demonstrate a sparse, Gothic tone, with the main difference being that Jetskiis are generally less restrained and are unafraid to unload the occasional screeching guitar riff. If the you are in the Bay Area, you can catch the band at the Hemlock Tavern on May 21.
