Aesop Rock (a.k.a. Ian Matthias Bavitz) is a recent San Francisco transplant having moved to the city from New York. He has been my favorite rapper in the alternative hip hop scene ever since I first heard his 2001 album Labor Days. Bavitz’s lyrics are dense, cryptic but evocative. His delivery is powerful and his production is dead on. He consistently released nothing but awesome records during the past decade including the fantastic EP “Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives.” The EP was originally released with seven tracks and an 88-page booklet containing lyrics from all of his albums released to that point. It was later re-released without the booklet and with an additional track titled “Facemelter.” You can win an autographed copy of the re-release here on Musical Pairings (see the above picture).
