Planes is the project of Brooklyn based experimental-pop songwriter Peter Toh. Toh and collaborator Zach Botham have prepped their debut EP entitled Mountainside for a limited edition vinyl release of 300 copies on September 21 with free digital download. It is a stunning debut featuring a musical smorgasbord of crisp audio textures and sonic intricacies. Opening cut “Pyramid” begins straightforwardly enough with acoustic strumming and synths, but builds into a melody that folds and unfolds upon itself as Toh’s vocals steadily alternate in and out of prominence within the mix. The following track “New Pearl” is a laser-like and shimmering slice of hypnotic synth pop that wouldn’t sound out of place in a Washed Out or Neon Indian track-listing. Intriguingly, each cut is varies stylistically from each preceding cut which keeps the album fresh and engaging.
