Part of Broken Social Scene member Brendan Canning’s side-project Cookie Duster, Toronto’s Jeen O’Brien (JEEN) is set to release her debut solo album Tourist in June. One of a few songs from the album already floating around“NY Island” is a bright and clearly catchy number that has a great garage-rock vibe to it. A fun pop song that’s just sweet enough.

  2. Single Servings: Digits – Death & Desire

Digits is the project of London-by-way-of-Toronto electro pop stylist Alt Altman. His latest mixtape, Death & Desire, beautifully blends sparse, plaintive electronica with soft, sensual R&B vocals on a slew of new Digits tracks mixed alongside cuts from Altman’s more R&B-focused project, Bad Passion.

With it’s clean, bouncy IDM rhythms and Altman’s intimate, hushed vocals, Death & Desire is an album I keep coming back to for repeated listens. Indeed, it’s been a regular presence in our home for some time now. Download it and see for yourself.

  3. Single Serving: The Weeknd – Early Demos

I know I’m not alone when I say I can’t stop listening to The Weeknd’s House of Balloons mixtape.  It’s easily one of the most exciting releases I’ve heard this year.  I described that one as “mingling all of the naughtiness of deep trembling bass, salaciously dirty lyrics, and mesmerizing samples.”  Unbelievably, they have two more mixtapes lined up to drop this year: Thursdays (to be released this summer) and Echoes in Silence (to be released this fall).  But, you don’t have to wait until then to hear some new tunes from the crew.  A collection of early demos have leaked to the Internet from when they were going by the name The Night.  Not only that, they just released a new song via YouTube titled “Rolling Stone.”  Enjoy!
