  1. Musical Pairings: Feist – The Reminder (paired w/ cabbage and shitake mushroom galette)

The word “galette” is an exotic word in my mind. This cabbage and shitake mushroom galette has a sort of exotic ring to it; nonetheless, it doesn’t taste exotic. Instead it has a somewhat refined rustic quality. It is unique, complex and flavorful, but still familiar and warming. In this regard, Leslie Feist‘s record The Reminder serves as a great musical analogy for this recipe. The Reminder is familiar, but unique; in addition to being a warm, complex, fun and sonically rich album. Although many readers will have reached a saturation point with songs such as “My Moon My Man” and “1 2 3 4,” the entire album is fantastic, and if you haven’t checked it out yet – I’d highly recommend giving it a chance.

The Reminder opens with “So Sorry,” which is probably my least favorite track on the album. However, following this song, it immediately picks up momentum with the track “I Feel It All” which features upbeat, bare acoustic guitar strumming and light, twinkling glockenspiel highlighting Feist’s pretty, catchy vocals. “My Moon My Man” has received considerable play on the radio and television and it is easy to understand why: Feist’s velvety smooth, hushed vocals combined with one of the catchiest melodies of the past five years are an irresistible combination. “The Park” is understated, beautiful and intimate. “Sea Lion Woman” could have been a single in its own right. And of course, if you have been living in a cave or underneath a rock for the past two to three years you may not know that the song, “1 2 3 4” is a phenomenally incessant pop song. You can sample a few tracks below, but if you like what you hear you should pick up a copy from Insound.
