  1. Turntable Kitchen’s ‘Fall Dinner’ Mix

    Welcome to another meal-themed Turntable Kitchen mixtape (you may remember our Breakfast Mix from a couple of months back). For this one, Kasey asked me to compile “five or six songs” to accompany her Fall Dinner Menu post. Obviously I couldn’t stop with only six tracks, so you’re getting a full fledged mix.

    My goal was to compile a list that could accompany both your time working in the kitchen and the dinner itself. With that in mind, the mix is intended to have a certain ebb and flow that might correspond to the mood of a warm and comforting fall meal. That said, I also recognize that your time in the kitchen might vary depending on what you’re cooking and your time around the table might vary from person to person. That’s OK. The main idea is that it starts relatively energetically, slowly builds, drops a little in tempo, and then finds a nice groove before finishing things out on a very chill note. You can loop it and let it start all over. Enjoy!

  2. September 2012 Breakfast Mix

    Kasey asked me to put together a mix tailored specifically for soundtracking a cafe-styled breakfast to accompany her latest Stylish In The Kitchen post. As you may already know, I love making mixes and I love me some breakfast, so there was no way I’d take a pass on this one.

    Since this is a breakfast-themed playlist, I approached this with a few rules in mind. First, I wanted the mix to open softly. After all, if you’re just sitting down bleary-eyed and with your first cup of coffee for the morning, you’ll want to begin with some gentle tunes. Second, I wanted to make sure it nonetheless remained intriguing so that it didn’t lull you back to sleep. Finally, I wanted to keep the pacing so that it grew more melodically upbeat as it progressed. Ideally, by the time you reach TRAILS AND WAYS, you’ll be feel pleasantly energized and ready to start your day. So let me know what you think, did I nail it?

  3. Single Servings: The xx – Angels (Bodhi Remix)

    Leave a Comment

    You’ve no doubt heard that The xx are poised to release their sophomore album Coexist on September 11. In fact, they’ve already released the first single “Angels” from the album. It’s sparse, velvety and as hot as wax dripping from smooth white candles.

    As you might imagine, it’s already getting the remix treatment from pretty much everyone on the Internet. As you can also no doubt imagine, most of those remixes aren’t particularly interesting or good. Thankfully, folks like Bodhi are out there working hard to justify the remix as an artform with his lush, newly composed version of the slow burning ballad. Hear his take and the original below.

  4. Turntable Kitchen :: March 2012 Mix

    I think you’ll notice right away that our March mix is a very different beast from the February mix. For example, we open this one with the sultry, shimmering new single from Beach House, whereas last month’s mix opened with an upbeat, tropical-island inspired B.I.G. remix. It’s indicative of the overall mood of this mix which I’d describe as cozier, more laid back, more introspective, and even a little sexier than it’s predecessor. You could float through the clouds on the back of Lemonade’s single. The Evy Jane single, like everything else I’ve heard from the duo, is irresistible. And that sexy, bassy Oscar Key Sung track will leave you asking: “Where did you get those Darth Vader powers?” What hasn’t changed is the quality and breadth of the new music you’ll discover on this mix. It’ll help you work. It’ll help you relax. And it’ll go with dinner as well as any bottle of red wine.

  5. Turntable Kitchen :: the October 2011 Mix (Plus Sonos PLAY:3 and Bridge GIVEAWAY)

    The October 2011 Mix is heavy on the new music with only a handful of tracks whose release will date back to more than a couple of months, but that is just a testament to all of the great music that has been making the rounds. I think 2011 will be remembered as a very good year for new music. A lot of the artists on here you’ve heard before if you follow us regularly, and a lot of the rest of it will be featured here in the near future during the course of the month. But however you look at it, the bottom line is that there is a lot to love here. Speaking of great music, I wonder if one of these artists is going to appear on a future limited-edition 7″ for Turntable Kitchen’s Pairings Box?  Could be, but our lips are sealed.

    Anyways, I’d suggest turning up the volume dial as loud as it will go and blasting these jams until you blow out those old speakers you’ve been using.  You’re probably thinking: “But if I blow out my speakers, what will I use to listen to the Turntable Kitchen November 2011 Mix?”  Well, you’re in luck!  We’re partnering with Sonos to offer one reader a Sonos PLAY:3 speaker system and a Sonos Bridge to setup your Sonos wireless network (approx. retail value $350)!  Sweet, huh?  You can see a picture below.  But I’m not going to give this baby up easily. To win you’re going to have to tell me your city’s best kept secret in the comments section. I’ll pick a winner on Monday, October 17th.  If you don’t win, you can always score Sonos equipment at Target.

    Update: The giveaway is now close and we’ve selected and notified our winner.  Stay tuned for more great giveaways!

  6. Turntable Kitchen :: The August 2011 Mix

    It’s something I can’t explain, but some of TK’s mixes come together easily, while others are labors of love.  The August mix definitely falls into the latter category.  I struggled with everything from committing to an opening track, track order and song selection.  Once I had a little over half a mix, I felt like it was still missing something.  Ultimately, I ended up hitting up some of my colleagues’ sites to find tracks to fill in the gabs.  I found the Bare Wires and Mikal Cronin tracks while browsing the consistently excellent See The Leaves; “HURTLOVE” and “Shells of Silver” were posted on the always spot-on Listen Before You Buy; Gorilla vs. Bear featured the Wildlife remix; and the Benoit & Sergio track was courtesy of elegantly stylish ISO50.  Despite the difficulties of curating this one, I think it turned out pretty great – so I hope you enjoy it too.
