I’ve talked a bit here and there about our move from San Francisco to Seattle, but I’ve been excited to share more details with you about our new city and our new home, now that we’ve been here for nearly half a year! I still can’t believe it happened and I still can’t believe that we’ve been here as long as we have. One of the big motivators for our move was the ability to have more room for our family. We loved (and still love) San Francisco but we had been ready to find a home to truly make our own.

We purchased a 1930s brick tudor with a huge backyard, a working fireplace (that we have yet to use!), a kitchen that definitely needs to be remodeled (sigh…), knob-and-tube wiring (I didn’t even know what that was until we moved in!), and a formal dining room — one of my favorite rooms in our house.

I hadn’t exactly pictured what my future house would look like but to be honest, I didn’t expect that it would be a tudor. That said, over the last few months, I’ve been very much charmed by it.

A few months ago, we partnered with Rejuvenation to outfit our house with some lighting that would really make it sing. When we moved in, our dining room had textured mustard-colored walls and a popcorn ceiling. What were the previous owners thinking?! We had the textures removed and decided to paint the room a bright white. Since the room is rather small, we didn’t want to crowd it with too much stuff; my idea of a bar cart was quickly nixed. We brought our reclaimed wood dining table and leather chairs from San Francisco, as well as our slim cookbook shelf and I really wanted to maintain a sense of minimalism in the room. So we held off on getting too much stuff, or putting too many things on the walls right away.

Our dining room is where we spend a lot of our time — it’s a place where we gather with people we love. I wanted it to be bright and airy during the day and warm and cozy in the evening. We worked with one of Rejuvenation’s design consultants, Erin, to help us work figure out what would and wouldn’t work in our home. It’s actually quite amazing that Rejuvenation offers in-house design services for FREE! Erin helped us distill our ideas into a vision and ultimately helped us select the dining room pendant of our dreams.

I’ve been dreaming about a big statement black pendant (I actually saved this image way before we had any idea we’d buy a tudor!) so it was super cool to see it in our dining room. The inside is white and reflects light really well so in the evening, it illuminates the entire table, while leaving the edges of the room a little dark — perfect for creating that warm, cozy feeling I was going after!

The lovely folks at Minted also helped us select a beautiful new piece of art to add to our room. I love how it adds a sense of peace and calm. I’ve lived near the ocean for practically my whole life and while the coast is a bit further now, we still have plenty of water nearby.  Tucked in the corner of our dining room is a potted indoor plant. I have a newfound appreciation for indoor plants, you guys.

Since we ‘finished’ the room, we’ve talked about what else we might want to put on the walls, but truthfully, I love how simple it is, allowing the focus to be the center of our table.

One of the other big selling pieces of our house were the two beautiful archways in our entryway — when you’re sitting in the living room, you can see through to the dining room — another reason for having a statement pendant! Erin also helped us choose a lovely, delicate globe light to illuminate the entryway. I love look up and down at it when I walk up and down the stairs to our room; it doesn’t obstruct the view of the big dining room pendant but creates a sweet presence in our small entryway.

I’m learning a lot about interior decorating but already, I feel like I have a pretty strong vision for what I like, and what makes my house feel like a home. Even without window coverings (we have yet to decide on shades, blinds, or curtains since we replaced our broken window…), the room feels ‘complete’ with just a few statement pieces.

Rejuvenation was kind enough to offer one lucky Turntable Kitchen reader a chance to win $200 to spend in their store or online. I’d of course choose one of our lights, but I also love this task lamp or would add to my growing collection of decorative pillows.
