Turntable Kitchen :: The Top Albums Of 2010

2010 was a great year for new music.  Exciting new bands and artists popped up by the boat load all over the Internet, and I previously documented many of those new bands on Turntable Kitchen’s Top EPs of 2010 and Top 7 Vinyl Releases of 2010.  And while my favorite EPs and 7″ singles were primarily released by those up and coming new artists, the best full length albums was split pretty evenly between the brand-new and the established.  Take a look, and let me know what you think I nailed and what I missed.

ty segall and toro y moi are good picks. i wouldnt say sleigh bells, surfer blood, or yeasayer were consistent enough to merit the high rankings. noticeably absent here are the walkmen, white denim, harlem, frederick squire, nina nastasia, and jason collett who all pitched great albums. i’d also have to say that hip hop this year was owned by das racist and ground up for me.

    Hey dave,

Thanks for the great comment. I love hearing about what I missed (too much to hear it all). For example, I’ve not heard frederick squire, nina nastasia, or ground up yet. I’ll be checking them out for sure.

Anyways, I quite liked the sleigh bells, surfer blood and yeasayer albums. All three received a ton of play early in the year for me. In June I would have expected to put sleigh bells higher on the list than they actually ended up.

Admittedly, surfer blood didn’t create something innovative – but it was damn great to hear some crunchy, pop power chords that didn’t suck.

Though to be honest, there is some part of me that thinks maybe I should flip yeasayer and flying lotus on the list…

Great list! I like almost every song you chose to highlight the albums listed, though I’m alittle surprised that Janelle Monae didn’t make the list. Tightrope and Cold War were hot on many other lists for 2010. *kanye shrug*

I’ve seen this image several times but I cant remember the artist. Who is it?

    Hey Nia,

It’s Neil Krug. There is a link to more of his work at the bottom of the post.
